1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Children ages 0-5 are invited to take part in our new 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. This program is designed to help children put their best foot forward with literacy, even before school begins. The benefits of reading aloud to your child are staggering. Not only will it help them to begin recognizing letters and sounds, but also to build narrative skills, vocabulary, and a lasting bond between you and your child. While the task of reading 1000 books may seem daunting, it’s not as hard as it may seem. The average picture book takes about 5 minutes to read. By reading 3 books a day to your child, you will read 1095 books in a year. Reading 1 book per day for 3 years equals 1095 books, and reading 10 books per week for 2 years equals 1040 books. It is a commitment, but one that the library can help you with.

When you register for this program you will receive a book bag and a folder with a reading tracker. You will fill out this simple tracker with your child and return it to the library for a small prize after each 100 books completed. We will also host small parties throughout the year in order to keep the program fun and interactive. At the end of the year, we will have a 1000 Book Bash for all participants, and a special recognition for the children who completed the 1000 book challenge.

Contact the youth department to register at any time, or with any questions. This program was sponsored by the Wellsville Rotary Club.
